AROMA AND COSMETICS

Odours leave their mark on the memory and the subconscious. Your body releases endorphins when you detect an odour that pleases you, so products that incorporate aromas generate positive sensations and feelings. Cosmetics are among these products.

LIMBIC SYSTEM AND AROMOATHERAPY

The limbic system is the network of cerebral neurons responsible for triggering instincts, feelings and memory, and is directly linked to the sense of smell. Fascinatingly, emotions can, to a certain extent, be triggered by different smells.

Patrick Süskind, in his novel Perfume, writes: “Odours have a power of persuasion stronger than that of words, appearances, emotions, or will. The persuasive power of an odour cannot be fended off, it enters into us like breath into our lungs, it fills us up, imbues us totally. There is no remedy for it.” And when we give ourselves up to the magical power of perfume, we can begin to enjoy and truly reap its benefits. Even though we may not be conscious of the trace left behind by an odour, that trace is there and manifests itself in our response to the circumstances we meet along our way in life.

We also recall an odour much better than we do an image. Though we may not be conscious of a memory, when we smell a certain odour again, the memory associated with it comes vividly back to mind in a powerful experience only comparable with the sensation of recollection through music.

The use of essential oils to perfume products has a positive effect on emotional well-being. This impact of odour on the inner self, triggered by our most intimate, authentic reality, helps achieve the natural beauty I talk about in this blog. For thousands of years, human beings have used plants to create perfumes. Though the perfume industry has become increasingly sophisticated and refined, its essence remains unchanged: it’s still all about the mind and the search for inner peace and well-being.

FRAGRANCE-FREE COSMETICS

If your skin is sensitive or you have allergies, you might choose to use fragrance-free products. You might also opt for more neutral-scented products if you are wary of certain odours. Obviously, any product will have its own odour, but without added fragrance this will be natural and organic, the kind of smell we associate with cleanliness and nature. So, fragrance-free is a perfectly valid choice.

Finally, scent is one reason for choosing one cosmetic over another. A fragrance-based choice can be conscious or, on the other hand, wholly subconscious and intuitive. Rather than overthink it, let instinct guide your choices: you might find you discover a component, positive for you, that you wouldn’t have come across otherwise.
