A little history to better understand our Croatian translation service

Croatian is a Slavic, or more specifically, a South Slavic language, spoken by 5.5 million people in Croatia and throughout the world.

The standard dialect is one of three that make up this language and is called štokavski (Shtokavian).

The other two are:

  • kajkavski (Kajkavian)
  • čakavski (Chakavian)

Their names come from the words:

  • što
  • kaj
  • ča

Meaning ‘what’ which reflects the differences between them.

Its spelling is morpho-phonological, meaning that each letter corresponds to a sound

And there are accents on the letters č, ć, ž, š and đ.

Its grammar is more complicated

  • As it has three genders:
    • masculine
    • feminine
    • neutral
  • And seven grammatical cases.

This system means that the declension of nouns or pronouns, and their corresponding adjectives, can change depending on the linguistic context, which can be complicated to learn.

Originally, Croatian was written in the Glagolitic alphabet, which is the ancient Slavic alphabet.

  • The oldest records of it date from the 11th century.
  • And it was in use up until the 19th century.

However, from as early as the 14th century onwards, the Latin alphabet was used more and more frequently and is the one used today.

Profesionalne usluge prijevoda hrvatskog jezika
