Croatian is a Slavic, or more specifically, a South Slavic language, spoken by 5.5 million people in Croatia and throughout the world. The standard dialect is actually one of three that make up this language and is called štokavski (Shtokavian). The other two are kajkavski (Kajkavian) and čakavski (Chakavian), and their names come from the words što, kaj and ča, meaning ‘what’, which reflect the differences between them.

Its spelling is morpho-phonological, meaning that each letter corresponds to a sound, and there are accents on the letters č, ć, ž, š y đ. Therefore, for speakers of other languages, particularly Spanish, writing and pronouncing it is not a problem.

Its grammar is more complicated, as it has three genders (masculine, feminine and neutral), and seven grammatical cases. This means that the declension of nouns or pronouns and their corresponding adjectives can change depending on the linguistic context, which can be complicated to learn.

Originally, Croatian was written in the Glagolitic alphabet, which is the ancient Slavic alphabet. The oldest records of it date from the 11th century and it was in use up until the 19th century. However, from as early as the 14th century onwards the Latin alphabet was used more and more frequently and is the one used today.
